Dear NHS members and friends,

Attached you'll find an invitation to the opening of an exhibition
that opens in April at the Concord Free Public Library, centered on
Ada Shepard's sketchbooks made in Florence while she worked as
governess to the Hawthorne children. I presented a paper on these 1858
sketchbooks at our Florence conference in 2012, and Susan Abele, a
descendant of Ada Shepard who wrote a great essay about them in the
NHJ, has since donated the sketchbooks to CFPL. The exhibition brings
together 100 related items of Hawthorniana, much more than the
sketchbooks! My lecture at the opening will be called "'This Sunny,
Shadowy, Breezy, Wandering Life': Finding the New, Seeking Renewal in
Florence, 1858." If you can't make it to the opening (which I know
will be difficult for many of you), the exhibit will be up until
mid-June.
Onward to spring!
